Looking back.

The cycle to work this morning was almost as much fun as yesterday. Yesterday morning I almost needed a snorkel it was raining that much and at one point I thought I had gone off road and was cycling up a river, the puddles these days are more like lochs very unlike puddles when I was younger that were something to have a splash in and enjoy. Then this morning with strong head winds it was like being on a turbo trainer, lots of effort and not going anywhere. At least the bike ride home was ok with the wind on my back which set me up nicely for the weight training session down at the gym.
After not running so well last weekend I have now started to question everything I do in the hope of finding an answer. Too many long runs, not enough speed work, weight training, cycling, body weight, the list is endless, I'm now trying to convince myself it was just a bad day, but the speed sessions with the Club are not going to well either so something is wrong ?????
The Thirsk 10 mile added prize bonus for running under 50 minutes should be finding a new home this year with the likes of Ste Hepples, Ian Fisher , Thomas Abyu and few more besides that look likely contenders. I remember racing against Thomas Abyu at the Guy Fawkes 10 miler in 2004, I thought he was ringer that Richmond Zetland Harriers had signed up for the day, but later I found out Salford Harriers had the same vest. On a windy hilly course he stormed away and was out of sight by one and half miles never to be seen again, until the presentation that is. He smashed the course record in a time of 52 mins and 30 seconds ish. With a 10 mile best of 49.05, half marathon 62.50 and a marathon time of 2hrs 10 minutes you could say he's not a bad runner. Myself I will be hoping he will have a bad day like I did along with about another dozen runners which will leave the door open for me to take victory.

Thomas is friends with James Kovacs (also Salford Harriers) that I work/train with. James said Thomas is trying for that double prize of 1st place and sub 50 minutes - although he had a terrible Dublin Marathon run recently in 3 hrs 5 mins.

There you go Gary - even the best runners have bad days. It can be the most frustrating of sports, and increasing your efforts can make things worse. I don't have any answers - only to convince yourself you had a bad day and see what happens on your next race.

Best of luck.
