Judgement Day.

Having spent so time of the last few months saying " I'll be back " , I actually made it to the start of the Dewsbury 10k race today. My plan was to run a negative split by running the second half of the race quicker than the first, after setting off too fast in 99.9% of my races I managed to keep to the game plan today even though it was hard to watch some of my close rivals pull away from me early in the race. Turning at the half way point I knew it was time for me to put the end game into action and open up the throttle, luckily for me an Hallamshire athlete took to the front of my chasing group so I settled in behind him and started to feel really comfortable even though the pace had increased some what. Mike Burret another close rival was just ahead and I was just bidding my time waiting for the 7km mark to attack, just before the 7km point Burret pulled out which I then came to the conclusion I was never going to catch the 5th placed runner so I might as well go for position and once again patiently ran behind the Hallmshire runner, to be honest I could of done with going a bit faster but I had decided on a last 500 metre blast to the line. The Hallamshire athlete credit due as gradually speeding up so his run was going to plan as well I thought, 500 metres to go and I attacked, 350 metres to go Hallamshire came back past me with quick huff of encouragement, I wasn't finished yet and 75 metres to go attacked again and got in front but then in the last 30 metres Hallamshire got the better of me and came past to grab the 6th place leaving me with 7th. My only disappointment was the knowledge I could of been another twenty seconds or so quicker at least if I had been forced to try harder. With a time of 31 minutes and 49 seconds I was more than pleased especially as there was plenty more I could of given in the last 5km.
With a start time of 9.00am I find I have no time to sit about ideally from getting up at 6.00am so I feel I run much fresher this way than siting about all day waiting for races to start. Maybe I don't need to be wafer thin after all and carrying the extra weight in muscle rather than fat makes hardly and difference. Who knows ?
It's now back to getting the long runs done ready for the marathon, with the Snake Lane 10 miler in 3 weeks time to stop any boredom setting in.

Well done with your run today, I think that you were in the prizes, although I don't think that you made it to the presentation. You looked to be going well when I saw you at the halfway turn.

A great run Gary - you must be really pleased with that time. You're theory of "winning comes in cans" must be right. I was using the left sock first theory today and it didn't work for me. I got level with you at 4.7k - but we were both running different directions!

Best of luck with your next race and marathon prep.

Thanks.
I don't believe the left sock first theory failed you, how do you know it wasn't down to the chip on the wrong foot. Don't ask ! I can't reveal all my secrets.
