Down To The Wire.
Burton Leonard 10k was the race this weekend. On arriving at Burton Leonard we noticed the car park wasn't as full as past years but after a quick warm up I felt good to go, I made my way to the start line not that anyone else loo
ked too keen then my wife told me the start was at 2.300pm not the 2.00pm I had said it was. Ooops ! By the time of the proper start time a record number of entries had turned up with a good turnout of good runners. The race started and fellow team mate Andrew Halliday lead the way and was setting a good fast pace, approaching the bridge just before the mile mark I took the lead so I could get a good go at jumping the fence in front of the bridge and with a quick hop I was over and away, the next obstacle was a cattle grid at full speed, Jim Bulman NYM AC dodged right to go round while I opted for the straight ahead brave but bloody dangerous option and luckily quick stepped across it. I kept with the front running and tried to keep a good hard even pace that I felt I was comfortable with but Bulman just wouldn't go away. I tried attacking and driving hard up the hills but I just couldn't make any ground on him. I did think about easing up and letting him do some of the front running but I was happy with my performance and knew he would more than likely fade away over the last 3 miles. Keeping the pace high on the cross country section and uphill towards the five mile mark Mr Bloody Bulman was still hot on my heels, I knew then it was going to be a battle all the way to the line. On the long hill towards the finish that cheeky Bulman started to come along side me which just made me try even harder and by the top of the hill I was in desperate need of oxygen, don't bloody loose now I was saying to myself as we started the final descent to the finishing line, Bulman started the sprint and I m
anaged to react quickly to keep level and then just before the finish I managed to find another burst which just about got me over the line first by the thickness of my running vest. A new course best time for me and another great race to treasure. The harder and the closer the race the better the feeling is afterwards. Team mate Andrew Halliday came in 4th place but 2nd in the Blacksheep Championship Series so yet again another great day.
